In this section, we will discuss two possible methods for analysing local orientation. These two methods fall under the general categories of ``gradient based'' and ``quadrature filter set based.'' We will see that the latter method offers the possibility of local phase analysis which can aid in the understanding of what type of grayscale structure gives rise to a particular orientation.
