John Wawrzynek is Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
at the University of California at Berkeley. Currently, he is the principal
investigator of the BRASS project ( Berkeley Reconfigurable
Architectures, Software and Systems.) His prior research project involved
the development of a connectionist network super computer, which led to
the design and implementation of the first single-chip-vector microprocessor.
At Berkeley, he has also been involved in the application of analog VLSI
technology to auditory sensory processing. He currently teaches courses
in VLSI design and computer architecture.
John received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology (1987) where he worked under Carver Mead, and holds a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Urbana/Champaign. His Ph.D. thesis at Caltech involved the development of algorithms and architectures for musical sound synthesis. He has consulted for numerous companies including Silicon Compilers Inc., Schumberger palo Alto research Lab., and the Information Science Institute (the MOSIS group) and has worked as a professional musician.
