Graham Birtwistle is currently Professor of Formal Methods and head of the Formal Methods Group within the School of Computer Studies
at the University of Leeds, England. He was previously Professor
in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Calgary,
Canada (1980-95). Some years prior (1968--73), he worked at the Norwegian Computing Center, Oslo, Norway, on one of the first compilers for Simula, the earliest Object Oriented (OO) language.

His research interests have included:

• compiler techniques for OO and functional languages;
• simulation languages: their design and their implementation, and formal semantics;
• the design, specification, implementation and verification of synchronous hardware designs;
• silicon compilation;
• the specification and verification of synchronous hardware designs, particularly the Manchester University AMULET implementations of the ARM microprocessor.
